Description:

Music Makes Your Child Smarter is aimed at parents whose children are involved into music, or who are considering involving their children in music.

Immediately on the first page of the introduction, the author makes these three assertions:

  • 1. Music can have a profound, positive effect on your child's mental and physical development.
  • 2. Every child is musical.
  • 3. Listening to music is beneficial, but making music is better still.

    The book is divided into two sections:

    Section 1: shows parents specifically how music has been shown to improve childrens' mental and physical development, language skills, math ability, social skills, memory, teamwork skills, self-expression and creativity.

    The author answers some of these common questions:

  • Are children innately musical?
  • Is there a "Mozart effect?" (Author's answer: Perhaps, but active music-making is more beneficial than passive.)
  • Can music benefit a child's health?
  • Should I be playing classical music to my child?
  • Should my child play an instrument?
  • Can my child compose music?
  • ....and of course, all of the related questions involving language skills, math, social skills, etc.

    Section 2: is a practical guide for parents who want to pursue involving their child in music. This section is arranged by age group, beginning with Pre-natal (singing to your unborn child, writing your own lullabies,) Newborns, Toddlers, Nursery, and Elementary.

    Here are just some of the ideas covered in this section:

  • Writing your own lullaby using your child's name;
  • First songs to sing (lyrics are included for these and many children's songs, in the text;)
  • Movement songs, action songs, interactive songs, songs for rocking, songs for bouncing
  • Finger plays; playing your first instruments
  • Making instruments with your children (with instructions and diagrams)

    The 53-track CD includes:

  • recordings of songs referenced in the book (Alphabet Song, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mendelssohn Song Without Words, pieces by Schumann, Grieg, Debussy and Brahms,)
  • Four specially written accompaniments designed for parents to write their child's own personalized lullabies to;
  • Music for movement (skipping, running, walking, marching and resting;)
  • and much more!

    Author Philip Sheppard is a cello professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and a lecturer in music education in London and New York; a recording artist who has recorded with David Bowie, among others; and the father of three! ©2007, 348 pages, Book & CD.
